What is Surrogacy?

When a Couple is unable to conceive in spite of undergoing treatments like IUI, IVF, ICSI etc, owing to various health conditions such as unhealthy uterus due to which the fetus may never have grown even though the embryos that have been transferred are healthy. During such circumstances the biological parents can possibly opt to transfer their embryo to a female with a healthy Uterus which would then facilitate the growth of the fetus. The Child born out of such a process would in all means be related to the biological parents whose embryo was transferred, although the female or surrogate mother would be the one who would have carried the baby of the couple for 9 months.

Who needs surrogacy?Indication for surrogacy

Infertility in a couple can be caused due to many factors leading to failure of possible treatments. When the female uterus is diseased due to fibroid, uterine abnormalities, endometriosis, endometrial adhesions, congenital absence of uterus, pelvic infections due to which the pelvis is destroyed, repeated abortions, in such cases surrogacy is advised due to complications with natural pregnancy caused due to the above factors. To add on to the list of reasons for Surrogacy Women after hysterectomy, renal surgery, cardiac/liver is left with surrogacy as their option to Child birth.

Is surrogacy legal in India?

Although many countries like USA and other European countries have banned the practice of Surrogacy in their lands. There are yet no laws as such against Surrogacy in India. But there have been some discussions for making surrogacy legalized to protect the rights of the child and the surrogate mother.

What is involved in Surrogacy?

When a couple decides to opt for Surrogacy after appropriate discussions, All related medical screening and counseling sessions are conducted pertaining to the couple's request for surrogacy. A suitable candidate for Surrogate mother is chosen from the pool of willing women that the hospital recommends.

These possible surrogate mothers have been thoroughly screened beforehand. After the completion of all legal proceedings, the date for treatment with IVF is decided often this could lead to a couple of months due to the availability. They are then treated with IVF or ICSI during their period cycle and the result of pregnancy is carefully studied.
Most of the couples prefer the surrogate mothers to stay at the hospital till the time of the delivery but as always this is optional. The stay of surrogate mother and all medical expenses are borne by the couple itself. Based on the case the birth of Baby is carried out in the hospital and once the baby is born the baby is then registered under the name of the biological mother. After which the baby us then handed over to the couple and necessary compensation provided to the surrogate mother till the time of her discharge.

Does surrogate mother stay in the Hospital?
This option is solely at the discretion of the couple opting for surrogacy and also the consent of the Surrogate. In some cases the surrogate prefers to go back to their family and report only during the checkup. While most of the Surrogates prefer to stay at the hospital to be taken care of, in such cases the couple must be willing to bear all the expenses.
